About this spot
Ras Sudr lies on the west coast of the Sinai peninsula on the Gulf of Suez, just under two hours' drive from Cairo. Over the hot interior a thermal northwesterly builds through the day, blowing from February to November – with over 80 percent wind certainty from March to October. It averages 16–25 knots, reaching up to 30 knots in September, the windiest month.
The flat lagoons are the signature: standing-depth, mirror-smooth water for beginners and freestylers, plus a larger natural lagoon mixing flat and chop. The open sea is only about 200 metres further out and is also flat and shallow-shelving. When is the best time to visit Ras Sudr? March to November, most pleasant in spring and autumn. The spot suits every level and has grown into the second hub of the Egyptian kite scene.
Location
Insider tips
The man-made lagoons are standing-depth and ideal for learning and tricks – especially smooth in a westerly. September is the windiest month, so bring smaller sizes. The thermal wind builds through the day and is usually steadiest in the afternoon.
⚠︎ Hazards
On the open sea the wind takes on an offshore component – only go out with experience and a buddy. Reef and coral patches occur; booties are wise. Plenty of wind in high summer calls for the right gear.
