About this spot

Safaga and neighbouring Soma Bay lie south of Hurghada and rank among the most wind-reliable regions of the Egyptian Red Sea. The Soma Bay lagoon offers around 80–90% kiteable days across the year – one reason PWA windsurfing is held here too.

In the morning the wind usually starts light and offshore from the northwest, turning side-shore from the north by midday. The roughly 2 km² lagoon is mostly knee- to waist-deep and flat to light chop – perfect for learning, while advanced riders find their place in the freeride area outside. Who is Soma Bay for? All levels: beginners in the standing-depth lagoon, experienced riders further out.

Peak season runs May to October with over 80% wind days and the strongest wind. But November to April still brings solid conditions at 60–80% wind probability, so the area works practically year-round.

Insider tips

Beginners practise in the standing-depth lagoon; advanced riders head outside to freeride. The early morning often starts lighter and offshore – the most reliable side-shore breeze arrives at midday.

⚠︎ Hazards

Offshore NW component in the morning – do not go far out without cover. Watch the reef edges at the lagoon mouth and avoid shallow patches at low water.
