About this spot
The shallow bay of Alaçatı on the Çeşme peninsula on Turkey's Aegean coast is one of the world's best-known flat-water windsurf and kite spots. The thermal northerly Imbat (the locally amplified Meltemi) builds almost daily around midday in summer – often from 10–11 am – and regularly reaches 20–30 knots. The U-shaped bay acts like a nozzle and can add several knots to the prevailing wind, while the standing-depth, glassy water in the inner section makes it an ideal learning zone. For many years Alaçatı was a fixed stop on the PWA Windsurfing World Tour.
When is the best time to visit Alaçatı? The main season runs May to September, when the Imbat sets in almost like clockwork and eases off again in the evening. Spring and autumn also deliver wind, then often stronger but cooler. The spot suits every level, from a first water start to freestyle.
Location
Insider tips
The rigging area and riding zone are clearly separated – follow the local school regulations. The Imbat arrives at midday and is strongest in the afternoon; if you prefer lighter wind, go out early. In 20–25 knots, a 8–10 m kite or a 4.5–5.5 m sail suits most riders around 75–80 kg.
⚠︎ Hazards
Very shallow in the inner section: watch for stones and seagrass on the bottom, and booties protect your feet. It gets busy in high summer – keep your distance from students and respect the separated riding zone. Further out the water gets deeper and choppier.
