About this spot

The north coast of Kos at Marmari is among the most consistent Meltemi beaches in the Dodecanese. A long, gently shelving sandy beach with side-onshore wind plus an offshore sandbank create a protected zone of standing-depth water where beginners can take their first runs without large rocks, reefs or current.

The Meltemi arrives here as a thermally enhanced north wind, usually building around midday and dropping off at sunset. Across the main season from May to September it often sits at 4 to 6 Bft, rising to 6 or 7 Bft with small waves on peak days. How reliable is the wind at Marmari in high summer? In July and August the wind probability runs around 80 to 90 percent. The spot suits learners and improvers as well as families looking for a wide school beach with stations.

Insider tips

Mornings are often lighter (2 to 4 Bft) with flatter water, a good window for first sessions; the thermal Meltemi picks up in the afternoon. Bring larger kites and boards for the lighter morning hours.

⚠︎ Hazards

Side-onshore wind pushes back towards shore, so it is relatively forgiving. On peak days at 6 to 7 Bft chop and small waves build up, so match your gear to the Bft strength.
