About this spot
Mikri Vigla on the west coast of Naxos is one of the most popular Meltemi spots in the Cyclades. A small headland divides the beach into two bays: on the north side the wind meets more open water with chop, while the south side is flatter and calmer – good for improvers, freestyle and wingfoiling. Add warm water, white sand and several centres right on the beach.
When is the best time to visit Naxos? The northerly Meltemi blows from June to September, usually strongest in July and August, often for days on end at 20 knots and more. In June and September the wind is somewhat more moderate and the island quieter. In summer the water is around 22–25 °C, so a shorty or boardshorts are usually enough.

Insider tips
In strong Meltemi, ride on the flatter south side and rig one size smaller. Staying in Mikri Vigla itself saves long journeys; the island books up fast in August. Strong sun and wind dehydrate you – bring water and sun protection to the beach.

The Meltemi can get very strong and gusty, especially at the headland and close to shore. There are rocks around the headland. Anyone who loses gear in strong wind drifts towards the open sea – use a centre with a rescue service.
