About this spot

South coast of Sardinia: a bay with very fine, gently sloping sand, framed by a rocky outcrop on the left and a rocky island on the right. Chia is considered the island's southern windsurf capital. In Mistral from the northwest the wind sits side-offshore to offshore and smooths the water – the best conditions for wave freeriders and racers. Right next door lie Cala Cipolla and Su Giudeu beach with further wave sections.

What brings the cleanest waves? The Scirocco from southerly directions builds proper swell here quickly, which can reach 2 to 3 metres and send clean lines towards the coast; the swell often holds for 2 to 3 days after the wind. The waves break early in the bay and run out as whitewater, but deliver a solid shorebreak. Best season is September to April. Chia suits advanced windsurfers and wave surfers after offshore Mistral and honest Mediterranean swell.

Insider tips

NW Mistral smooths the wave (side-offshore) – the best wave days. After Scirocco spells the swell often holds 2–3 days; also check Cala Cipolla and Su Giudeu.

⚠︎ Hazards

Offshore Mistral pushes you out to sea – not a beginner wind, plan your distance and way back. A rocky outcrop and rocky island frame the bay; mind your position and the shorebreak.
