About this spot

Lo Stagnone is a shallow salt lagoon in western Sicily, right next to Marsala and its old salt pans. Four offshore islands – Isola Grande, San Pantaleo, Santa Maria and La Scuola – almost fully enclose the water, creating a sheltered micro-climate with steady wind and a glassy surface. The depth averages around one metre, so you stand knee- to hip-deep over long distances, which makes it one of Europe's most reliable flat-water spots and a perfect place to learn.

When is the best time to visit Lo Stagnone? The main season runs April to October, when the thermal westerly (W, SW, NW) fills in almost daily through summer and regularly hits 20 knots and more. Because of its position between the islands and the mainland, the lagoon is one of the few European spots that also delivers wind surprisingly often in spring and late autumn. It suits beginners, freestylers and wingfoilers alike.

Insider tips

Get on the water early during the hot summer months – mornings are more comfortable and less crowded, while afternoons fill up. The standing-depth water is forgiving and ideal for practising water starts and first jumps. In 18–22 knots of thermal wind, a 9–11 m kite suits most riders around 75–80 kg.

⚠︎ Hazards

Very shallow water: watch the muddy bottom, which has patches of seagrass and stones, during water starts and falls. On windy summer days the lagoon gets very busy, so keep your distance from students and schools. Booties protect your feet.
