Cuxhaven – Döse

About this spot
A classic North Sea spot at the Elbe estuary, about one to two kilometres west of the Kugelbake landmark and marked by the Strandhaus Döse. The tidal flats off Döse, Duhnen and Sahlenburg belong to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea national park (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Döse is far quieter than well-known Duhnen. Riding is tide-dependent: at high water there is open water over the flats, while at low water the sea retreats for kilometres. Best wind comes from west, northwest and southwest, and the spot is usable only for roughly four hours around high water.
When is the best time to visit Cuxhaven? Spring and autumn are windiest – April to June and September deliver the most reliable conditions with pleasant water temperatures.

Insider tips
Best conditions around high water ±2 h – check the tide tables. Schools on Duhner Hafenstraße. The Kugelbake spot itself only works in east wind; for west/NW choose Döse.
⚠︎ Hazards
Strong tidal range – at low water you face kilometres of walking across the flats. Tidal channels carry water and current even at ebb. Stay clear of the Elbe shipping lane.
