About this spot

Grüner Brink on the north coast of Fehmarn is one of the best-known kite and windsurf spots on the Baltic Sea. The long sandy beach with gently sloping water offers standing depth close to shore and, further out, chop to small waves depending on the wind. The Grüner Brink nature reserve lies right next to it – which is why there is a clearly defined area for kiters and windsurfers.

Which wind works at Grüner Brink? Best in north-east to east as well as north and north-west – the wind then blows onshore to sideshore. Southerly winds are offshore on the north coast and unsuitable; on those days riders move to the spots in the south of the island. When is the best time to visit? May to September for pleasant water temperatures, spring and autumn for more wind.

Insider tips

Before your first session, ask a school on the island where you are currently allowed to launch and ride – the rules can change with the season. The nature reserve and the swimming zone are off limits, even when nobody else is on the water. Fehmarn has spots for almost every wind direction: in south or south-west wind, switch to the south coast instead.

⚠︎ Hazards

Southerly winds are offshore here – do not go out. There is some seagrass and stones at the entry point, so neoprene shoes help. In summer the spot is busy; keep your distance from swimmers and from the nature reserve.
