About this spot

The small harbour town of Hvide Sande on Denmark's North Sea coast in West Jutland separates the open North Sea from the Ringkøbing Fjord – with only a narrow strip of land in between. The fjord side offers sheltered, shallow standing-depth water for beginners and freestyle, while the North Sea side has a kilometre-long sandy beach with proper Atlantic waves for wave riding and big air. The wind comes mainly from west, southwest and northwest; in pure westerlies you switch to the flat-water spot near Kloster on the fjord side.

When is the best time to visit Hvide Sande? The windiest periods are spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), though strong summer low-pressure systems also deliver good sessions. A classic dual venue of the North Sea.

Insider tips

Wind direction decides the side: SW/NW work on both fjord and sea, in pure westerlies move to the Kloster flat-water spot. Spring and autumn bring the strongest wind.

⚠︎ Hazards

Cold North Sea water – wetsuit mandatory, thick depending on season. The North Sea side has shore break, current and tidal range. Watch for offshore wind on the fjord side.
