About this spot

Norderney is the largest of the East Frisian islands and counts as the North Sea surfer island for many. The west beach, with its classic wave spot at the Januskopf, fires when a low pushes across the North Sea or a solid west to northwest wind sets in – clean waves then break in front of the island, side-onshore from the left. Real wave conditions for windsurfers and wave kiters; after a few days of wind a proper swell builds.

A common question: when is Norderney at its best? The biggest waves arrive in autumn and winter with the depressions, September to April. Summer is lighter and busier. The island is tidal – plan your window around the water level and watch the current at the southern tip.

Location

Insider tips

In west to northwest the Januskopf is first choice for clean waves, with side-onshore wind from the left. Plan gear logistics on the island beach – it is not a short walk from the harbour.

⚠︎ Hazards

Strong current at the southern tip of the island. Hard shorebreak on the west beach in storms. Tidal current runs parallel to the beach – allow for drift.
