About this spot
Norddeich is East Frisia's mainland classic: ferry port to Juist and Norderney, with wide tidal flats and marked kite zones on the east and west beaches. You rig and launch from the green strip between the harbour and the bathing beach. The prevailing wind is clean westerly, strongest in spring and autumn and often light in summer – for many riders Norddeich is the gateway to North Sea kitesports.
Norddeich is a tidal spot with a range of roughly 2 to 2.5 metres; you ride about four hours before to four hours after high water, with the three hours around the peak being prime time. Within one tidal cycle you get everything – mirror-flat standing water on the rising or falling tide, choppier water at high tide. When is Norddeich worth it? Spring through autumn (April–October); the shallow, expansive flats make it ideal for beginners and improvers.
Location
Insider tips
High water ±2–3 h is the best window. Kite zones are marked (east and west beach), schools right on the beach. On the rising or falling tide the flats stay mirror-flat even in light wind – perfect for practice. Westerly wind is clean and onshore.
⚠︎ Hazards
Tide-dependent – tideways hold deep water; keep clear of shipping lanes and the ferry channel. Offshore wind on a falling tide carries a real risk of being swept out across the flats.
