About this spot

Warnemünde is the big-city beach off Rostock and delivers real wave character in strong northerly wind – home of the Warnemünde Windsurf Cup and a classic for wave windsurfers and wave kiters. Prevailing directions run from SW through W and N to ENE; at the mole on the eastern end a demanding wave for experts builds under the right conditions. A speciality is the ferry wave: as the ferries from Denmark arrive, they send clean wave sets you can ride on a SUP or wave board.

When does Warnemünde work best? The wave-rich main season is September to April, when low-pressure systems bring punchy conditions to the Baltic. The water-sports entry for kite and windsurf is in the beach-access 13 zone from May to September; in NW kiters tend to gather to the west below the Wilhelmshöhe.

Location

Insider tips

In strong N/NW the wave shows up – then it is a wave day. Water-sports entry from May to September at beach access 13, in NW rather to the west below the Wilhelmshöhe. The ferry wave can be cleanly caught on a SUP/wave board.

⚠︎ Hazards

Harbour entry/exit with ferry traffic close by – stay well to the east of the mole. Noticeable current at the mole and a hard, rarely breaking wave for experts only.
