About this spot

Strande sits on the west side of the outer Kiel Fjord, with a fine sandy beach that shelves gently and is partly stony, and the harbour right next door. Home of the Kiel surf club and one of the best-known areas in Kiel Bay. The Baltic here is tide-free: no water-level window, flat to small wind chop near shore.

In north and northwest the wind comes in free and clean. The prevailing west to southwest wind is offshore here but is accelerated by a jet effect in front of Strande – usable, but with care. In northeast to east a swell builds quickly in the fjord, and from 6 Beaufort long Baltic waves over 2 metres roll in further out. A good spot for kite, windsurf and wingfoil from beginner to advanced, best season April to October.

Insider tips

Be careful in offshore west/southwest and do not head too far out in the accelerated jet. Parking is available but has height barriers – plan ahead with a van or roof box.

⚠︎ Hazards

Offshore west/southwest wind: drift onto the open fjord, make sure you can get back unaided. Stony ground near the shore.
