About this spot
Tip of the Butjadingen peninsula, directly opposite Wilhelmshaven at the eastern entrance to the Jade Bight. Thanks to the deep shipping channel into the bight, you can surf here relatively tide-independently – a rare advantage on this coast. At low water there is shallow standing depth; with strong southwest wind and a rising tide, clean ramps build up. You rig and launch on land and ride out on the Jade; in SW/W/N the wind runs freely across the bay.
Are you allowed to kite at Eckwarderhörne? Important: after an accident in 2007 there is a kite ban on the bathing beach – windsurfers may use the marked area while respecting the bathing buoys. Kiters move to the permitted Butjadingen zones. A fine spot with lots of room and a panorama of Wilhelmshaven, April to October.

Insider tips
Park along the K86 / beach access; enter from the N or S depending on wind. Because of the kite ban on the bathing beach, kiters should use the permitted Butjadingen zones (Tossens, Burhave, Fedderwardersiel).
⚠︎ Hazards
Strong currents at the Weser estuary, especially on the ebb towards the Knock; in the south tidal flows reach double-digit knots. Note the kite ban on the bathing beach since 2007.
