Wilhelmshaven – Geniusstrand

About this spot
The Geniusstrand lies slightly north of Wilhelmshaven at the funnel-shaped entrance to the Jade Bay, between the city and Hooksiel – one of the best-known kite spots in Lower Saxony. Huge sand and Wadden flats, best directions W, NW, SW and N. In strong N/NE the wind smooths the swell running into the Jade Bay into nice, very wide ramps around 1.5 m – otherwise it is more chop. You rig and launch on the beach below the dyke.
How does the spot work with the tide? Within a window of roughly three hours before to three hours after high water; on the incoming tide it quickly becomes wonderfully shallow – ideal for kite beginners and wingfoilers. Best season is April to October, with warm Wadden water in summer.

Insider tips
Optimal within about three hours around high water. N/NE produces the best wide ramps. Kite school on the beach, parking right at the dyke.
⚠︎ Hazards
Tide-dependent: at low tide very long marches across the Wadden, strictly avoid the tidal channels. Currents can be strong at the funnel-shaped Jade Bay entrance.
