About this spot

A man-made harbour basin at the Hooksiel outer tide channel, right next to the North Sea beach on the Jadebusen bay. Roughly 2 to 3.5 hours before and after high water the huge, uniformly shallow bay fills up – a perfect stand-up area and a beginner's dream with a slightly muddy bottom. Just about 150 m off the bank the wind blows evenly and clean. In the fairway and the outflow towards the Jade, strong wind and ebbing water can produce real waves and current – terrain for advanced riders. Best wind is any northerly direction, ideally northwest, as the spot opens to the north.

When is the best time to visit Hooksiel? It is windiest from April to June and September/October; in high summer arrive early, when beach and water are at their busiest.

Insider tips

Peak season in summer – arrive early; parking right at the spot. Time the flatwater session around high water ±2 h; for waves and current use the ebbing water in the outer channel.

⚠︎ Hazards

In the outer channel and fairway, ebbing water sets a strong current towards the Jade – not for beginners. Watch the tide tables or the bay runs dry.
