About this spot
The Edersee in northern Hesse, around 50 kilometres west of Kassel, is one of Germany's largest reservoirs and lies beside the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The best-known surf access is the Bringhäuser Bucht: a fairly small, sheltered bay with a very gently sloping beach and a large standing area – ideal for beginners. You rig on the shore and ride on flat to choppy freshwater among wooded slopes.
Which wind works best here? North to northwest directions run particularly well, along with west and southwest wind; in summer the thermal brings long, even afternoons. The surf season runs from May to September, and from April at some schools. Important: the water level is reservoir-dependent and can drop significantly in late summer, which shifts the entries and standing areas. An idyllic bay spot for windsurf, wingfoil and SUP.
