About this spot
The Steinhuder Meer is Lower Saxony's largest lake and has been a cult area of the German windsurf scene for decades. Shallow, quick to chop up and with few obstacles along the shore, it builds reliable wind and runs remarkably steadily for an inland water. Which wind works best at Steinhuder Meer? Everything between south and west-southwest unfolds freely and with power; northerly directions are blocked by the Mardorf shore, so you launch better from the Steinhude side. The main spot is the Weiße Düne east of Mardorf, well signposted, with a standing area and sandy beach. The shallow water warms up early, ideal for beginners, freeriders, wingfoilers and SUP. Kiting is only permitted in the designated northwest section. Water sports are seasonally open (roughly 20 March to 31 October).
