Kalpitiya – Kappalady Lagoon

Kalpitiya – Kappalady Lagoon

Sri Lanka · Kitesurf · Wingfoil

About this spot

Kappalady Lagoon lies about 30 minutes south of Kalpitiya and is a shallow saltwater lagoon separated from the open Indian Ocean by only a narrow sandbank. During the southwest Yala monsoon (May–September/October) the wind blows reliably side-onshore, usually at 15–25 knots. The key draw: in summer Kappalady runs less gusty and flatter than the larger Kalpitiya lagoon – ideal standing-depth water for freestyle, safe first runs and wingfoil.

When is the best time to visit Kalpitiya? The main season is the SW monsoon from May to October, when the wind often holds for days on end. A shorter second season comes with the NE monsoon from December to March. One of the best beginner and wingfoil spots in Asia.

Location

Insider tips

In the SW monsoon a 9–12 m kite usually does it, smaller on strong July/August days. Standing-depth flat water is ideal for practice. A second, shorter season runs with the NE monsoon December–March.

⚠︎ Hazards

The narrow sandbank separates you from the open sea – don't drift unintentionally past it. Take care in any offshore phases. Otherwise forgiving flat water.
