Vella Island

About this spot
Vella Island is a remote, curved sandbar in the Puttalam Lagoon off Kalpitiya, about 25 km downwind of the main lagoon and reachable only by boat in summer. The shape of the bar shelters the water from the open ocean once the SW monsoon kicks in, leaving butter-flat standing water over a pale sandy bottom across a radius of roughly 2 km.
Wind runs from May to October on the southwest monsoon, often blowing nearly around the clock and picking up real strength out on the island; 18 to 30 knots is typical. Is Vella Island really Sri Lanka's best freestyle spot? In clean conditions this sandbar's flat-water character comes very close. It suits advanced and pro kite and wing riders after steady strong wind and space for tricks.

Insider tips
Get there by boat from Kalpitiya – there is a set morning departure, so be on time. Bring your own water, sun protection and a spare line; there is no infrastructure on the sandbar.
⚠︎ Hazards
A bare sandbar with no rescue or shade – plan downwinders and the return only with boat support. If the wind drops you risk being stranded out on the lagoon.
