About this spot

Kühlungsborn is a classic Baltic seaside resort with a long promenade, a pier and beach chairs – and, in the right conditions, one of the finer wave spots on the coast. It is rideable from NW through N to E, with NW the best direction. In W the wind is sideshore from the left at the main spot in front of the campsite in Kühlungsborn-West; when it swings to NW you can choose between cross-onshore in K-West and sideshore at the marina in K-Ost.

This is tide-free Baltic: flat chop in moderate wind, and from around 6 Beaufort a proper wave builds. Where can you kite in Kühlungsborn in summer? In peak season only a small zone right in front of the Anglersteig is open, because the beach and promenade are full of swimmers – off-season it gets far more relaxed and wavy. That makes the spot good for beginners in light wind and for wave fans when it blows hard. Main season runs April to October.

Location

Insider tips

In W head to the main spot by the campsite in K-West (sideshore from the left); in NW choose between cross-onshore K-West and sideshore K-Ost at the marina. In summer kite only in front of the Anglersteig – otherwise use the off-season.

⚠︎ Hazards

Crowded beaches and promenade in summer – stick to the kite zone in front of the Anglersteig. From 6 Bft strong wave and current; onshore directions push you towards the beach.
