About this spot

At the mouth of the Trave lies Travemünde, with a city beach, marina and ferry port to the Baltics. In Lübeck Bay, east is the key direction: in N, NE and E the wind drops freely into the bay and builds a moderate, clean wave. You rig on the beach; you ride in a bay with solid infrastructure but heavy summer bathing crowds.

Where is the best wave? Towards the Brodten cliff and Niendorf the Baltic wave hits the shore most freely in strong easterlies – the classic for advanced riders. Best time to travel is the windier off-season from September to April, when the rideable east wind blows more often and the beaches are empty. For intermediates and pros who can handle wave and offshore components.

Location

Insider tips

For the best waves head towards the Brodten cliff/Niendorf in strong east wind. The city beach is only safely kiteable in the off-season; in summer it is all swimming zone. East wind blows offshore here – check your gear.

⚠︎ Hazards

Ferry traffic and a harbour exit with large shipping – keep a safe distance. East wind is offshore, and at Brodten cliff rock blocks lie just below the surface.
