About this spot

Weissenhäuser Strand sits at the eastern end of Hohwachter Bucht, between Heiligenhafen and Weissenhaus, attached to a large holiday park with a wide sandy beach and short walks from the car park to the water. There is plenty of room to rig and launch, but the actual kite zone is only a marked-off section – the rest stays a swimming beach.

This is tide-free Baltic: in WNW to NW and in north-easterly conditions swell rolls into the bay and the waves break on a sandbank about 30 m off the beach – sideshore to sideonshore, one of the better wave spots on the Schleswig-Holstein coast. Is Weissenhäuser Strand good for beginners? Not really: with waves, current and almost no standing area it suits confident advanced riders when it is on; newcomers are better off on the flatter Bodden lagoons. You can get on the water at the boathouse in the south or the surf station in the north of the bay. Main season runs April to October, and on windless days there is a cable park right by the car park.

Location

Insider tips

Best launches are at the boathouse in the south or the surf station in the north of the bay. In WNW/NW the wave breaks on the sandbank ~30 m out – great for surfboard riders. No wind? The cable park by the car park saves the day.

⚠︎ Hazards

Waves, current and the lack of a standing area make the spot demanding when it is windy – not for beginners. Swimmers in summer: stick to the kite zone and keep clear of the bathing beach.
