About this spot

Großenbrode lies on the mainland shore in front of the Fehmarnsund Bridge, opposite the island. The special thing about the Südstrand: two venues in one tiny spot. A spit just a few metres wide separates the marina from the open Baltic – while small waves roll outside, the harbour side holds smooth, flat water. The first roughly 50 m are standing depth with a light shorebreak, which also makes the spot interesting for wave beginners. A long, low mole runs several hundred metres out; when the wind blows across it, mirror-flat water sits right behind it.

How is the wind at Großenbrode? The wind window is large, rideable from ESE–NE through to WSW–WNW; in west conditions the wind comes in nicely laminar. In east wind the beach launch gets tight and the wind pushes onto the spit towards the harbour, so launch with foresight. Rig and launch on the beach; the riding is out on the water. In summer reckon on roughly 30% planing wind – and on fewer kite crowds than on Fehmarn itself.

Insider tips

For flat water go behind the long mole or into the harbour area; outside there is a small wave. In east wind the beach launch is tight – come early and launch with foresight.

⚠︎ Hazards

In east wind it pushes sideonshore towards the spit and harbour – check your gear and keep a safe height. Watch for stones and the mole in the area.
