About this spot

The Graswarder is the designated kite spot of Heiligenhafen (kiting is banned at Steinwarder). The beach shelves very gently and offers around 80 to 100 metres of standing area in the Gillhus section on the eastern part – sandy, sheltered and ideal for first jumps. Offshore sandbanks between Fehmarn and Heiligenhafen keep larger waves out, so the water usually stays flat.

In east wind it is properly smooth, north wind blows fully onshore but with hardly any shore break, and NW is considered optimal: cross-onshore, building a steeper wave on the sandbank. When is the best time to visit? April to October brings reliable wind and warm beach weather. Park and rig at the large car park with grass areas right by the wide beach.

Location

Insider tips

East wind for smooth flat water, NW for some wave on the sandbank. Large standing area (approx. 80–100 m) in the eastern Gillhus part – perfect for learning. Park only in the official lot and rig outside the marked bird-breeding/protection zones.

⚠︎ Hazards

Nature reserve – marked zones and breeding areas must be strictly respected. Kiting is banned at Steinwarder; use the Graswarder only.
