About this spot

The Wiek Bodden on the Wittow peninsula in northern Rügen counts among Germany's largest standing-depth areas. The learner zone on the eastern shore at Wiek measures roughly 700 by 4000 metres, has a sandy bottom and is tide-free – a sheltered inland body of the Baltic Sea with separate entries for kite and windsurf.

The best conditions come with west to southwest wind; thanks to the prevailing westerly weather pattern the wind here often blows offshore and therefore with few gusts. Every direction except east is usable. Is Wiek suitable for beginners? Yes – shallow standing water over a large surface makes the Bodden the classic learning spot of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, while more advanced riders use the space to work on foil and freestyle. The strongest wind phases fall in spring (April to early June) and late summer/autumn (late August to October).

Insider tips

Use the separate entries for kite and windsurf. The standing-depth water is ideal for first water starts – with west/southwest it blows offshore, so check your gear.

⚠︎ Hazards

Offshore west/southwest wind: if your gear fails you drift out onto the open Bodden – never go alone and only with reliable equipment.
