About this spot

On its western side Amrum has the Kniepsand, one of the widest sand surfaces in Europe – up to two kilometres wide, ideal for rigging and a first dry run with a trainer kite. The flat bay at Wittdün only fills with enough water for about four hours around high tide; at low water only the shipping channel south of the island works. In west to northwest wind, the low-pressure westerlies hit the island almost unobstructed and stay steady. There is very little going on out on the water – plenty of space, good for wingfoiling and kite beginners with some tidal experience.

When is the best time to visit Amrum? Spring and autumn for wind, summer for warm water and quiet.

Location

Insider tips

Ferry from Dagebüll. No big scene, but endless space. Use the Wittdün bay around high water; at ebb only the shipping channel south of the island works.

⚠︎ Hazards

Tide-dependent – at low water the bay largely dries out. The shipping channel south of the island carries current and vessel traffic.
